The President of the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT) Ghana, King Ali Awudu asserts that declaring a state of emergency during the period will affect the upcoming elections and the sitting government.
While speaking to the press, King Ali explained that declaring a state of emergency goes through a long process before it can be implemented.
According to him, declaring that within this period will be a problem since it is an election year, reiterating that it will affect the electoral fortunes of the government.
King Ali however explained that although the Organized Labour knew that calling on the President to declare a state of emergency was not a good time, they had a motive to achieve.
“Declaring a state of emergency goes through a process. The President initiates it, and it takes 7 days for the Council of State to gazette it. Then it goes to parliament for parliament to address it.”
“As we speak, we have like 2 months to elections by the time the government goes through the process of declaring a state of emergency, we may have gotten close to elections and nd when the state of emergency is declared, it will automatically affect the 7th December elections”. He explained
King Ali further explained that the major reason for the call was to revoke the L.I. 2462; which means people who have been given licenses to mine in water reserves and the forest reserves will be chased out by the military if they make any attempt.
The much-anticipated nationwide strike that was scheduled for Thursday, October 10, 2024, has been postponed by Organized Labour.
On Wednesday, October 9, 2024, union leaders had an emergency meeting where they evaluated the situation and decided to call off the industrial action.
Assurances from the government to address illicit mining led to the decision to call off the strike by Organized Labour. According to Organized Labor, in order to combat illegal mining activities in forest reserves, the government has taken significant actions, including stepping up the Operational Halt initiative, which is spearheaded by the Ghana Forces.
