CSOs vow to observe Election 2024 despite EC’s refusal to grant accreditation

A coalition of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) has condemned the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to deny them accreditation to observe the 7 December elections, describing the move as a threat to Ghana’s democratic integrity.

At a press conference held earlier today, the group, made up of over 20 organisations including the Centre for Conflict Resolution-Ghana (CENCOR), the Jatikay Centre for Human Security and Peace Building, the Human Security Research Center Ghana (HSRCGh), and the FESF Foundation, vowed to proceed with their observation activities, accredited or not.

Jude Balma, a representative of Election Watch Ghana, expressed the coalition’s determination to monitor the elections, emphasising the crucial role of independent election observers in ensuring transparency and accountability. “The refusal of accreditation will not stop us from performing our constitutional duties. We are committed to ensuring transparency and accountability in this election process,” he declared.

The coalition also criticised the EC’s refusal to engage with them, describing the decision as unilateral and dismissive.

Adib Saani, Security Analyst and Executive Director of the Jatikay Centre, called for the Commission to reverse its decision before Saturday, warning of the potential repercussions of excluding CSOs from the electoral process. He argued that the absence of independent observers could deepen mistrust in the electoral system and heighten the risk of disputes or violence.

“This decision undermines the credibility of our elections. The absence of independent observers will only increase public mistrust and potentially heighten the risk of electoral violence. We demand that the EC grant accreditation and address this issue promptly,” Saani said.

In a press statement read at the event, the coalition expressed deep concern over the EC’s stance, questioning its commitment to transparency and accountability. They argued that the exclusion of CSOs not only erodes public trust but also threatens the democratic principles of inclusivity and fairness. The refusal, they noted, deviates from longstanding practices that have seen CSOs playing a pivotal role in ensuring credible elections in Ghana.

The CSOs further warned that the EC’s actions could damage Ghana’s international reputation as a beacon of democracy in Africa. They called on Ghanaians, political parties, religious leaders, traditional authorities, and the international community to join them in holding the Commission accountable.

“Democracy is not a gift; it is a collective responsibility. The EC must remember that it serves the people of Ghana, not its Chairperson,” the statement emphasized.

The coalition reaffirmed its commitment to promoting transparency and safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process, insisting that their efforts would not be deterred by the EC’s refusal to grant accreditation. As the December elections approach, the CSOs remain steadfast in their resolve to ensure that the will of the people is upheld.
