The National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG) has reaffirmed its commitment to tackling Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in elections and political administration in the country.
Studies indicate that approximately 30% of Ghanaian women experience sexual violence at least once in their lifetime.
Speaking at a forum held on Thursday, 28th November 2024 in Accra under the PMI-WILL and ILGRP initiatives, NALAG President Alfred Asiedu Agyei highlighted the persistent challenges faced by women in politics and governance.
To address these issues, Agyei outlined NALAG’s plans to introduce comprehensive policies and programs. These include regular workshops aimed at building women’s capacity in governance and advocating for stronger measures to eliminate GBV within local government systems.
“We must create an inclusive society where no group is marginalised. This is both a moral obligation and a necessary step for national development,” Agyei stated.
The forum, organised as part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, sought to promote women’s participation in decision-making and raise awareness of the need to eradicate all forms of abuse from society.
About Gender-Based Violence
According to the European Union, Gender-based violence is a phenomenon deeply rooted in gender inequality, and continues to be one of the most notable human rights violations within all societies. Gender-based violence is violence directed against a person because of their gender. Both women and men experience gender-based violence but the majority of victims are women and girls.
