The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has stepped in to resolve a dispute over the termination of the University of Cape Coast’s (UCC) vice chancellor’s (VC) Johnson Nyarko Boampong contract.

Boampong’s contract was revoked last month by the UCC council, which cited a breach of the university’s statutes.

The council argued that Boampong would reach the mandatory retirement age of 60 before the end of the extended term.

However, GTEC has directed that Boampong remain at post while an investigation is carried out.

Acting deputy director general of GTEC, Francis Nunoo told the Asaase Breakfast Show (ABS) on Thursday (8 August) that the decision was taken to maintain a harmonious learning environment.

“From our side as a regulator we like consensus and consultation in making final decisions so that there is a harmonious university; a harmonious place for teaching and learning,Nunoo said.

“So, that’s why we issued such a letter,he added.

He also revealed that the Education Minister, Yaw Osei Adutwum, has established a committee, including GTEC, to investigate the matter.

“A small committee has been set up by the Minister of Education that includes GTEC to quickly get to the bottom of the various issues that led to the situation, the acting GTEC deputy director stated.

“It wouldn’t be long before a public declaration on the way forward is made,he added.
