The Acting Central Regional Director of Health Services, Dr. Agnes Anane, has urged traditional authorities, stakeholders, and individuals to collaborate with the health sector in breaking the transmission chain of cholera as swiftly as possible.
Speaking during a media and stakeholders’ engagement on the cholera outbreak, Dr. Anane emphasized that combating cholera is not solely the responsibility of the Ghana Health Service (GHS).
“Cholera is not just a burden of Ghana Health Service but a burden for everybody—stakeholders, traditional rulers, and individuals. Therefore, we must come together to break the transmission of cholera and improve survival rates,” she stated.
Dr. Anane disclosed that the Central Regional Health Directorate has recorded 720 suspected cholera cases, with 47 confirmed across eight districts, including Awutu Senya, Gomoa East, Mfantseman, Cape Coast, Agona West, Twifo Hemang Lower Denkyira, Awutu Senya East, and Effutu.
She stressed the importance of early detection and treatment, reiterating that cholera treatment is free. “If anyone experiences diarrhea or vomiting, they should report to the hospital immediately for treatment. This will help save lives,” Dr. Anane urged.
Highlighting preventive measures, she called on the public to revisit hygiene practices popularized during the COVID-19 pandemic, such as frequent handwashing under running water and the use of Veronica buckets in communities.
“Houseflies play a significant role in transmitting bacteria. It is crucial to maintain cleanliness to reduce the spread of cholera,” she added, emphasizing the role of personal and community hygiene.
Dr. Anane appealed to the media to act as ambassadors in raising awareness and promoting preventive measures. “The media’s role is vital in educating the public to eliminate cholera and prevent further outbreaks,” she said.
