Boakye Agyarko calls for rebranding of NPP to reaffirm founding ideals

Boakye Agyarko, a former Energy Minister under the Akufo-Addo administration and an influential member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called for the party to undergo a significant rebranding.

Agyarko’s remarks come amid growing concerns within the NPP about a perceived departure from the party’s founding principles and a tarnished public image.

In a statement reflecting on the NPP’s current state, Agyarko pointed out that the desire for rebranding was an admission that the party had veered from its core values.

He noted that this deviation has affected the party’s direction and identity, fueling calls for reform and a return to the NPP’s original ideological brilliance.

“The urgent call for rebranding is a tacit recognition that we have lost our way,” Agyarko remarked. “Our current brand is tarnished, and we are unhappy with the state of affairs.”

Drawing inspiration from John Gardner’s “Self Renewal,” Agyarko emphasized that any organization, including political parties, must periodically re-evaluate its purpose and return to its foundational principles. For the NPP, this means rediscovering and embracing its core beliefs—values that include defending the rule of law, promoting a free market economy, and ensuring the protection of individual rights.

Agyarko outlined that the NPP must recommit to its original ideals, such as the decentralization of power, the protection of property rights, and fostering an efficient market economy. These, he believes, are crucial to ensuring the prosperity and welfare of all Ghanaians.

“The NPP must remain true to the values that defined our party,” Agyarko stated. “Our central objective is to promote the welfare of Ghana’s citizens, and to do so, we must restore the ideological brilliance of our party.”

The call for rebranding highlights the need for the NPP to reaffirm its commitment to the ideals of liberal democracy, free enterprise, and inclusivity, as it seeks to reconnect with voters and solidify its position in Ghana’s political landscape.

Agyarko’s statement signals a broader push within the party to reshape its future by reconnecting with its past, ensuring that the NPP’s brand reflects its core principles, and inspiring the next generation of Ghanaians to support the party’s vision for the nation.
