Mr. Koku Anyidoho, the President of the Atta Mills Institute and former Head of Communications during the late President John Atta Mills’ administration from 2009 to 2012, has renewed calls for a transformational and transgenerational agenda to tackle the challenges facing Ghana.
In particular, he highlighted the ongoing galamsey (illegal mining) crisis, urging that after 32 years of the 4th Republican dispensation—equally shared between the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and New Patriotic Party (NPP)—Ghanaians must demand comprehensive solutions from the nation’s leaders.
According to Anyidoho, both major political parties, having governed for 16 years each, should now shift their focus beyond partisan politics and embrace long-term, visionary plans that will lead the nation towards sustainable growth.
He emphasized that the time has come for Ghanaians to hold their leaders accountable, specifically mentioning Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia (DMB) and former President John Mahama (JM), who are expected to run in the next presidential elections.
“We’ve been in this 4th Republic for 32 years—NDC has ruled for 16, NPP for 16. What we need now is a solid transformational and transgenerational agenda. Especially when it comes to the galamsey menace, we need to force DMB and JM to give us their visionary plans to fight it,” Anyidoho stated.
He likened the galamsey issue to a chronic disease that has persisted for too long, requiring urgent intervention. “This is not about politics anymore. It’s like a patient suffering from a chronic disease that needs all medical experts on board to be treated once and for all in a theatre,” he remarked, underscoring the need for collaboration and practical solutions.
The galamsey crisis has severely affected Ghana’s environment, particularly its water bodies and farmlands, threatening both human lives and agricultural productivity.
While previous administrations have initiated efforts to curb illegal mining, including military crackdowns and the formation of inter-ministerial committees, the problem persists, leading to increasing frustration among citizens.
Koku Anyidoho’s call reflects a growing sentiment that without a strategic and sustainable approach to solving issues like illegal mining, Ghana’s development may continue to be hampered. He is known for his strong advocacy for the legacy of President John Atta Mills and has often spoken about the need for principled leadership rooted in national interest.
