Legislative versus Judicial Tensions: Bagbin will put his foot down – Gyampo on

Tensions are rising within Ghana’s political landscape as Professor Ransford Gyampo, a Political Science expert at the University of Ghana, predicts an impending confrontation between the Legislative and Judicial branches of government.

This assertion comes in light of recent actions by Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin and a Supreme Court ruling that has raised questions about the authority and independence of these arms of government.

Professor Gyampo’s comments were made during a discussion on TV3’s Key Points monitored by MyNewsGH.com, where he highlighted the potential for conflict following the Supreme Court’s recent decision that ordered the declaration of certain parliamentary seats as vacant. This ruling stemmed from circumstances surrounding members of parliament who had allegedly vacated their positions due to various legal and constitutional issues.

The Supreme Court’s ruling, which was based on interpretations of constitutional provisions regarding the status of MPs, has raised significant concerns among lawmakers.

Following the verdict, there are fears that Speaker Bagbin may respond with what some are describing as a “foot down” approach, asserting the independence of Parliament and possibly rebuffing the implications of the ruling. “The stage is set for an unnecessary showdown between the Legislature and Judiciary,” Gyampo warned, noting that the Speaker might view the situation as contemptuous and challenge the authority of the judiciary.
