Ghana’s national U-20 women’s football team, the Black Princesses, played out a goalless draw against Mexico in an international friendly on Thursday (22 August) at the Club Deportivo Choquenzá in Bogotá, Colombia.
The match served as a crucial final test for head coach Yussif Basigi’s side ahead of the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, which kicks off in Colombia on Saturday (31 August).
Both teams are set to compete in the tournament, with the match providing an opportunity to fine-tune strategies and assess player readiness.
The game started with intensity from both sides. Mexico created an early opportunity in the ninth minute, but Ghana’s Afi Amenyeku managed to clear the ball, conceding a corner kick.
The Black Princesses had their first real chance in the 28th minute when Salamatu Abdullai’s effort went over the bar.
In the second half, both teams pushed for a breakthrough. Ghana’s captain, Stella Nyamekye, came closest to scoring when her powerful header was brilliantly saved by the Mexican goalkeeper.
Ghana’s campaign in the World Cup will begin on Monday (2 September) with a match against Austria.
The Black Princesses will also face Japan and New Zealand in their other Group E fixtures.
