Obuasi Mines Death: AGA ordered to foot medical bills, facilitate burial of deceased

President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama has asked the management of Anglogold Ashanti to bear the cost of medical expenses of persons who sustained injuries in the clash at their mine.

Also, they are expected to ensure that the seven people who died as a result of the clash are buried.

The President has also ordered for an investigation to ensure that persons involved in any illegality is brought to book.

The statement from the presidency tasked the security agencies to ensure there is peace and that such an occurrence will not happen in the future.

Background

Reports indicate that over seven people are dead as a result of the clash between the military and some small-scale miners in Obuasi. 

The reports indicated that some illegal miners entered one of the shafts of AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi, where they clashed with the military personnel who were preventing them from entering the mine illegally.

The illegal miners who were armed to the tooth are said to have fired at the military who were forced to protect themselves.

The troops as a result of the shootout killed seven out of the illegal miners who numbered up to 60.

While others sustained several degrees of injury, others bolted from the mines.

The local media is reporting that some cars have been burnt beyond recognition.
