Ashanti Region: Deadly fire in Obuasi claims three lives, nine hospitalised – Officials say

At least three people lost their lives in a devastating fire explosion near Stadium Junction at Bogobiri in the Ashanti Region town of Obuasi, on Friday (13 December).

Nine others sustained injuries and were rushed to the hospital for medical attention, according to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).

The fire broke out at 11:10 a.m., and firefighters from AngloGold Ashanti and Fomena swiftly arrived at the scene by 11:15 a.m. After hours of intense firefighting, the blaze was brought under control by 1:08 p.m. and completely extinguished at 2:23 p.m.

The explosion caused extensive damage, destroying 12 salon cars, one minibus, four metal containers, and two concrete structures. However, the timely intervention of the firefighting teams salvaged seven metal containers and three nearby storey buildings, along with their contents.

The GNFS says investigation into the cause of the fire is currently underway as authorities work to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident. The efforts of the emergency teams helped prevent further devastation, saving lives and minimizing damage.
