Ghanaian football legend Asamoah Gyan has announced his withdrawal from political affiliations, opting to concentrate on humanitarian work and youth development.
Gyan, who previously held a role within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as chairman of the Youth and Sports Manifesto sub-committee for Mahamudu Bawumia’s presidential campaign, made his decision public in a statement on social media.
The Black Stars’ all-time top scorer expressed regret over not focusing enough on youth initiatives.
“I haven’t been fair to the youth and the people of Ghana,” Gyan posted on X (formerly Twitter). “Henceforth, I am not affiliated to any political party; I will continue with my humanitarian work and help the youth of Ghana in my own small way.”
In his message, Gyan called for peaceful elections on 7 December and reaffirmed his commitment to non-political ventures. “Nothing political. I wish all the political parties a peaceful election on the 7th December. God bless our homeland, Ghana. Thank you.”

The 2010 BBC African Footballer of the Year also outlined his vision for youth development through sport, emphasising his desire to give back to the community that shaped him.
“Football has taken me to the world’s biggest stages, but it’s the values I learned here—resilience, discipline and unity—that made me who I am. My vision is to empower the youth of Ghana and Africa through sports and philanthropy.”
Reiterating his independence from political influence, Gyan said, “This is not about politics; I am fully independent from political influence.”
“This is about our children, our communities, and our continent. Together, with the support of international organisations, royal families, and philanthropic partners, we can create lasting change that empowers our youth to build the future they deserve.”
Gyan unveiled plans to establish sports academies, training centres, and mentorship programmes, which will nurture young talent across a range of sports. He also emphasised the importance of education and life skills, aiming to prepare Ghanaian youth for success beyond the pitch.
“Through the Asamoah Gyan Foundation, the Moah Green Foundation and the All-Regional Games, we will build sports academies, training centres and mentorship programmes that nurture young talent in all sports,” he stated.
“More than that, we’ll emphasise education, character, and life skills to prepare our youth for success beyond the field.”
“I believe sports can unite and inspire us in powerful ways. Together, we can harness that power to uplift the next generation and create a brighter future for Ghana and Africa,” Gyan concluded.
