Ashanti regional chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi) has suspended his campaign tour of the region following an accident involving his team.
The incident involved a former Ashanti Regional New Patriotic Party (NPP) communication director, Dennis Kwakwa, and two others.
They were returning from a campaign tour in the Asante Akim South Constituency when the incident occurred on Wednesday (2 October), according to George Opoku Amponsah an aide to Antwi Boasiako. He refuted claims that the victims had passed on.
“It was the 22nd constituency we had visited. Just a few meters from Odumasi, near Konongo, before reaching Bomfa Junction, we were traveling in a convoy of six vehicles. A vehicle was approaching from the opposite direction, and the fourth vehicle in our convoy managed to avoid a collision.”
“However, Dennis Kwakwa, who was driving the fifth vehicle, had to take evasive action. In the process, the truck clipped the back of his vehicle, causing him to lose control, and it ended up in a ditch. They were taken to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where they received treatment and have since been discharged. Fortunately, none of them sustained any injuries or bruises”, Amponsah said.
“For now, the campaign remains suspended. We want to use this opportunity to indicate to the people of the constituencies we are yet to visit that Wontumi will definitely show up because when the accident happened the Chairman said we had to put the campaign on hold. And so that is why we couldn’t visit Atwima Mponua yesterday and Juaben today. But I want to assure them that he will definitely show up”, he further stated.
This is the second time a party official has been involved in an accident as the campaign intensifies ahead of the upcoming election.
In July, the communication director of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah was involved in an accident. The accident is said to have occurred at Duapompo, near Konongo in the Ashanti Region.
Ahiagbah has since been discharged. No official statement has been released by emergency and security authorities in both cases.
