Akufo-Addo’s personal bodyguard collapses during SONA 2025

During Nana Akufo-Addo’s State of the Nation Adress (SONA) on Friday, January 3, 2025, parliament was disrupted by an unexpected incident as Colonel Isaac Amponsah, the Aide-De-Camp (ADC) and personal security guard to the president.

Colonel Amponsah, who has been the President’s ADC since February 2023, suffered a medical emergency while on duty.

Colonel Amponsah’s collapse has not yet been attributed to exhaustion or any underlying medical condition.

Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo’s ability to deliver his speech, despite his advanced age, has garnered attention, especially because his younger bodyguard lost his balance and fell during the event.

Ghana’s outgoing president, Nana Akufo-Addo, shared a candid reflection on his administration’s battle against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, and the lasting impact it had on the country, including the 2024 elections.

Before the unfortunate incident, Akufo-Addo sought to clarify misunderstandings surrounding his government’s stance on galamsey, responding to critics who believed the fight against illegal mining lacked urgency or commitment during his speech.

“I have always been firm in my stance against illegal mining,” he stated passionately. “I will not shy away from doing what is right for the future of this country, even if it costs us politically.”

The president acknowledged the significant political cost his party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), paid as a result of his anti-galamsey position.

He noted that several NPP Members of Parliament (MPs) were defeated in mining regions where illegal mining has deep roots and strong local support.
