Quash “illegal” extension of Prof Akosua Dickson’s tenure, KNUST staff prays high court

Another lawsuit challenging the recent extension of vice-chancellor Prof Akosua Dickson’s tenure has been filed at the High Court, Asaase News has learned.

The applicant, Isaac Mensah, a stores superintendent at the University’s Procurement Department, is praying the court to nullify the extension on grounds of “illegality and procedural impropriety.”

He argues that the governing council’s decision is unlawful and should not be allowed to stand. He further contends that permitting the extension would undermine the statutes governing the university and deny other qualified individuals the opportunity to be considered for the vice-chancellor position.

This legal action follows a similar suit filed by an alumnus challenging the vice-chancellor’s reappointment two weeks ago.

The earlier case is scheduled to be heard Tuesday (30 July).

Meanwhile, the leadership of the Ashanti Youth Association is taking steps to meet stakeholders over the issue following a petition to their office by the KNUST branch of the Asante Students Union. Secretary of the Association, Tweneboah Kodua says they will seek the intervention of the Manhyia Palace to resolve the impasse.

“As I speak with you the president of AYA has directed me that we should write to the office of the governing council and the school administration and that we want to engage them to know what is actually happening. We also want to meet those who took the matter to court”, Kodua revealed.

“KNUST is one of the institutions dear to Asanteman, also the Asantehene is the chancellor, and this is happening at the time the king is not around and so we need to tread cautiously”, he added.
