OCRC 2024: Five community champions gear up for grand finale at Manhyia Palace

Five finalists are poised to compete for the ultimate prize at the grand finale of the Otumfuo Community Reading Challenge (OCRC) 2024, slated for 20 September 2024, at the Manhyia Palace.

The competition, which has drawn young reading talents from various communities, has been one of the most exciting editions yet, with students demonstrating exceptional skill in reading both Twi and English.

The semi-finals, held earlier this week at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), featured ten contestants representing ten different communities, including Mankranso, Feyiase, Kenyase, and Twedie. Each contestant competed in areas such as fluency, pronunciation, and speed, pushing their abilities in both languages.

After five intense rounds, five community champions emerged victorious, securing their spots in the grand finale.

Among the finalists is Maame Antwi Baffour from Feyiase, who narrowly advanced to the finals with 96.0 points. She was followed closely by Loretta Boakye Acheampong from Effiduase, who scored an impressive 96.5 in contest two of the semi-finals.

However, Kenyase’s Emmanuel Arthur fell short by a fraction of a point, finishing with 95.5, just shy of qualification. Similarly, Mampong’s Freda Mensah Sarpong was eliminated with a score of 94.2.

Mankranso’s Salamatu Issah surprisingly advanced with a score of 94.5, while her contender from the Oduom community was eliminated after scoring 93.6. The highlight of the semi-finals was Twedie’s Akua Amankwa, who emerged as the top scorer with an astounding 97.2 points. Rounding out the finalists is Boaman’s Francis Osei Boamah, who secured his place with 96.3 points.

While the finalists celebrated their success, it was a difficult end for contestants from Offinso and Kunsu, who were unable to progress after scoring 95 and 94 points respectively. The semi-finalists demonstrated immense dedication, leaving no doubt that the grand finale will be a fierce competition.

The Otumfuo Community Reading Challenge, established to promote a love for reading and boost literacy levels among Junior High School students, holds special significance this year.

The 2024 edition commemorates the silver jubilee celebration of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the revered Asante monarch. In his 25 years of reign, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has been a key advocate for education, and the reading challenge is a testament to his vision of fostering academic excellence among the youth.
