The National Communications Authority (NCA) has approved the application of Space X Starlink GH LTD, operators of Starlink Satellite Broadband.
This paves the way for the entity to offer Satellite Broadband Services in Ghana.
According to reports the approval follows the policy approval of the Satellite Licensing Framework in Ghana by the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation.
The administrative processes towards the license issuance are ongoing and will be completed shortly.
In March 2024, the Communications Minister while addressing the country disclosed that Starlink is in the process of being approved.
The Minister addressing the country after the Internet cut that lasted for weeks encouraged other operators to also come on board.
“Starlink is in the process of being licensed,” Minister Owusu told members of parliament.
“And other operators are being encouraged to land in Ghana. We must also invest in operationalizing RASCOM (Regional African Satellite Company) instead of each country going at it alone,” added Ursula Owusu.
Aproval of Starlink will be a major boost for internet access in Ghana.
The company has low Earth orbit satellites that offer speeds competitive to cable and fibre with coverage across the entire country, including remote and rural areas not served by traditional providers.
