The Youth Caucus for the Movement for Change has condemned the comments by Majority chief whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh on illegal mining in water bodies in Ghana.
A statement from the Youth caucus for the Movement for Change issued on September 5, 2024 and signed by its National Youth Leader, Duke Aaron Sasu ESQ described his comments as irresponsible, divisive, insulting, and a clear show of the degree of negligence of political actors in the NDC and NPP.
“Despite these grave issues, the Majority Chief Whip of Parliament’s recent statement, blaming the opposition NDC more than the ruling NPP for polluting water bodies, is both irresponsible, divisive, insulting and a clear show of the degree of negligence of political actors in the NDC and NPP. The devastation caused by galamsey is a national emergency that requires unity, not political point-scoring,” the statement said in parts.
The Youth Caucus of the Movement for Change questioned the commitment of the NPP and the NDC in the fight against galamsey considering the equalization taking place.
“The toll of environmental destruction inflicted by galamsey activities keeps mounting as the days go by, and the NPP and NDC are without regret measuring their pollution levels instead of tackling it. The majority of our water bodies have been contaminated and rendered unusable, while over 34 forest reserves have been destroyed for parochial gains of illegal miners under the watch of the NPP and the NDC.”
