Your statesmanship is noted – Mahama praises Akufo-Addo ahead of inauguration

President-elect John Dramani Mahama has expressed heartfelt gratitude to outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo for his cooperation in ensuring a smooth and seamless transition of power, describing the process as a testament to Ghana’s democratic maturity.

During a symbolic tour of the Jubilee House ahead of his inauguration, Mahama highlighted the importance of collaboration in safeguarding the democratic legacy of the nation.

“Thank you very much for your cooperation,” he said, addressing Akufo-Addo. “The briefings we’ve received from the transition team over the past few weeks have prepared us adequately to take over the reins of government.”

The gesture of goodwill between the two leaders has been a significant feature of the transition period. Shortly after the Electoral Commission declared Mahama the victor in the 2024 presidential elections, Akufo-Addo placed a congratulatory call to his successor, setting a positive tone for the handover.

“Your decision to reach out immediately after the results were announced sent a strong signal about your dedication to upholding Ghana’s democratic principles,” Mahama remarked, praising Akufo-Addo for demonstrating statesmanship in a moment that often tests political rivalries.

The transition process, guided by the Presidential Transitions Act (2012), has been co-chaired by Chief of Staff Frema Osei Opare on behalf of Akufo-Addo and Julius Debrah, a key aide to Mahama.

The teams worked collaboratively to ensure all administrative, logistical, and governance details were addressed ahead of the new administration’s swearing-in.

“I want to thank you and your side of the transition team for what has been a cordial and smooth transition,” Mahama added. “We do think that we are quite ready with the information we have to start work immediately when we finish the inauguration tomorrow.”
