Economist and Lecturer at Garden University College in the Ashanti Region, Samuel Owusu says the wholesale implementation of national policies in the country is not helping.
According to Samuel Owusu, the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy should be reduced. He said that the government pays attention to students in the boarding school more than students in the day school hence both are not equally financed.
“When you take the big schools, the so-called elites SHS in the country, most students who attended these schools are the children of the rich. With private schools, those who attend are people whose parents can afford the bills. So this FSHS is subsidizing the rich”, he observed on Kumasi-based Abusua Fm.
Samuel Owusu further added that based on the ongoing policy, the rich seem to pay less tax arguing that it is subsidizing the rich by catering for them under the Free Senior High School policy.
He advised the government to identify the deprived schools and needy children in the country and give them the needed support. He added that it is the responsibility of the parents to pay school fees for their wards then the government comes in to support them. Hence, the Free Senior High School policy in his view is not helping the country.
