A legal battle has unfolded as Wesley Girls Senior High School (SHS) is being sued for allegedly denying Muslim students the right to practice their religion.
The lawsuit, filed by Ghanaian citizen Shafic Osman, accuses the school of systematically suppressing the religious rights of Muslim students by preventing them from observing Islamic practices.
Osman is seeking several legal declarations, including one that the school’s policy violates the provisions of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.
The plaintiff’s legal team argues that the policy at Wesley Girls, which prohibits Muslim students from practicing Islam, contradicts key constitutional rights, such as freedom of belief and the right to practice one’s religion.
The lawsuit also contends that the school’s policy, which compels students to practice Methodist Christianity, is discriminatory and unlawful.
The plaintiff is also challenging the idea that public schools should have the authority to impose religious practices on students, arguing that such actions undermine the equality and welfare of Muslim students.
