The Central Regional House of Chiefs has pledged its support to President John Dramani Mahama and his Vice, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, in their efforts to develop the region.
“We assure you that we will work closely with you to address the challenges facing the Central Region, improve the well-being of our people, and drive development,” the chiefs affirmed.
Speaking on behalf of the traditional leaders, the President of the House, Odeefo Amoakwa Boadu VIII, made this commitment during President Mahama and Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s Thank You tour in the region.
“The people of the Central Region are delighted by your presence today. It is an honour and a mark of respect for Nananom and the people of this region,” he stated.
Odeefo Amoakwa Boadu VIII, who also serves as the Paramount Chief of the Breman Asikuma Traditional Area, urged the government to implement initiatives that would create employment opportunities for the region’s youth.
He emphasized that the chiefs of the Central Region have been actively seeking ways to enhance the socio-economic well-being of the people and contribute to regional development.
“Unfortunately, the role of chiefs in national governance has been relegated to the background by successive governments. There is a need to reconsider the relationship between the government and the chieftaincy institution to strengthen collaboration,” he stressed.
The traditional leader called on the government to invest in skills development to attract industries that could provide sustainable employment opportunities for the youth.
“We look forward to a stronger relationship between the government and our traditional institutions, making this region a destination of prosperity where our cultural heritage is preserved,” he added.
He further urged President Mahama to prioritize the mining sector, particularly lithium, to ensure the youth benefit from its potential.
“The lithium agreement, which was expected to transform the Central Region, is still awaiting ratification by Parliament,” he revealed.
On her part, Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang expressed disappointment over several abandoned projects initiated under the previous NDC government.
She highlighted stalled developments, including hospitals, schools, roads, and the Anomabo Fisheries College, as key areas that need urgent attention.
