The NPP’s surprising defeat in the 2024 elections, especially to John Dramani Mahama and the NDC, has stirred many discussions, particularly regarding the party’s declining influence in its traditional strongholds.
A notable shift occurred in the Ashanti Region, where the NPP has long enjoyed steadfast support. In this election, however, the NDC managed to capture several seats previously held by the NPP, signalling a significant change in voter sentiment.
NPP stalwart, Andy Appiah-Kubi has shared his perspective on the party’s electoral setback in an interview with Joy News.
He pointed to the Ashanti Region’s crucial role in the NPP’s defeat, acknowledging that the party’s failure to deliver promised development projects contributed to the loss of voter trust. Appiah-Kubi emphasized that the Ashanti Region, historically a stronghold for the NPP, saw growing discontent due to unmet expectations.
“There are long-standing issues in the region that remain unresolved,” Appiah-Kubi explained. “One glaring example is the interchange project initiated by former President Kufuor, which has been left incomplete for years.
Despite the NPP being in power for eight years, this crucial infrastructure remains a distant promise.” He also mentioned other delayed or neglected projects, which he believes created a sense of frustration among the region’s residents.
Appiah-Kubi noted that the NPP’s leadership under President Akufo-Addo seemed disengaged from the region’s needs, which ultimately resulted in voter apathy.
“The attitude of the leadership suggested a lack of interest in improving the region, and the voters responded with their ballots. This is a punitive response to broken promises,” he added.
