Residents in Ho and surrounding communities in the Volta Region are battling an acute water shortage following the shutdown of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) Kpeve Headworks for emergency repairs.
The disruption has forced communities, including Peki, Kpeve, Sokode, Akrofu, and the Ho Municipality, to scramble for alternative water sources, with many resorting to untreated streams and ponds.
The water crisis has left households and businesses in turmoil, sparking frustration among residents.
Sylvia Yesutor, a mother of a three-month-old baby, described the situation as exasperating, lamenting that she has no choice but to wake up at dawn in search of water.
Others, like Benjamin Sebuabe, have criticised the lack of timely communication from authorities. “Schools, businesses, and households are using unhealthy methods to get water, putting our health at risk,” he said.
The crisis has led to desperate measures. Asaase News observed residents moving from house to house, seeking water from households with private wells.
Mavis, another affected resident, made an urgent appeal to non-governmental organisations and government agencies for sustainable solutions to the recurring issue.
In a statement issued on Thursday (2 January), GWCL acknowledged the disruption, citing emergency repairs at the Kpeve Headworks as the cause.
The company’s emergency response team is reportedly working round the clock to resolve the issue and restore water supply.
GWCL has advised residents to make alternative arrangements for their water needs while repairs are underway.
