The Electoral Commission (EC) has reported a high voter turnout following the close of polls on Saturday evening.
Preliminary reports from EC officials across the regions indicate many voters cast their ballots by the end of the voting period.
During a media briefing at the National Collation Centre in Accra, Mr. Benjamin Bano-Bioh, Director of Electoral Services, said that the Commission would provide more detailed information on voter turnout once it received full reports from the constituencies.
He confirmed that 95 percent of polling stations had closed by 1700 hours.
Mr. Bano-Bioh noted also that the Biometric Verification Devices functioned well, significantly reducing the processing time, with voters completing the voting process in just three minutes.
“The elections have been seamlessly devoid of the usual (issues) that characterised previous elections.
“We were able to achieve this because we set up a strategy that ensured the smooth flow of the process,” he said.
Mr. Bano-Bioh said that the elections were largely peaceful, with the exception of an incident in the Northern Region that resulted in one fatality.
He said that the incident was not caused by any action or inaction on the part of the Commission.
The EC commended its officers for their professionalism throughout the process and commended the political party agents for their cooperation with the Commission.
“The media has been very professional. We entreat the media to ensure that the results you announce are the same as what the EC declared,” Mr. Bano-Bioh added.
Collation of results at the Constituency Collation Centre is ongoing following the completion of counting at the polling centres.
