Vincent Ekow Assafuah has raised critical questions about the feasibility of President John Dramani Mahama’s ambitious promise to cancel the E-Levy and other taxes within his first 120 days in office.
The Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, expressed scepticism, pointing out that such commitments while appealing during campaigns, may face significant practical challenges in implementation.
“John Mahama said that within the first 120 days, he is going to cancel the E-Levy, Betting Tax, etc. This was before he took over the reins of government.
He is now trying to rationalize the minds of the Ghanaian people, but it may not be easy to implement such promises,” Assafuah while speaking on Point Blank on Channel One TV monitored by MyNewsGh.
Building on his point, the MP argued that the taxes Mahama seeks to abolish were introduced as critical measures to sustain the nation’s economy, even if they were unpopular among citizens. He suggested that Mahama’s administration might eventually come to terms with their necessity.
“It means these taxes are necessary,” he said, adding that the challenge the New Patriotic Party (NPP) faced during its tenure wasn’t merely about introducing taxes but failing to effectively communicate their purpose to the people.
Assafuah’s reflections offer a broader perspective on governance and the importance of managing expectations.
He acknowledged the difficulties the NPP faced in explaining critical policies like the E-Levy, which was met with widespread resistance, and attributed the party’s electoral defeat partly to its communication shortcomings.
