Police in the Bolgatanga East District of the Upper East Region have impounded an articulated truck loaded with 500 bags of cocoa that were being smuggled to Burkina Faso. The truck was impounded in Zuarungu upon a tip-off.
Police impounded the vehicle on July 31, 2024, after monitoring its movements based on intelligence it had gathered. The vehicle was headed for the Kulungungu border where it would then cross over to Burkina Faso.
The smugglers had labelled the goods as waste cocoa beans in order to outwit security agencies. However, a thorough inspection of the bags on August 1, 2024, by a joint team of police, customs, NIB, Defense Intelligence and Plant Protection and Regulatory section of the Ghana Immigration Service, MOFA, proved otherwise.
The origin of the cocoa beans has been linked to Gonokrom in the Dormaa Municipality of the Bono Region.
The truckload of cocoa beans is currently in the custody of the police as investigations continue.
