On 18 May 2024, boxing fans witnessed history unfold as Oleksandr Usyk (22-0, 14 KOs) defeated the previously undefeated Tyson Fury (34-1, 24 KOs) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
This victory cemented Usyk’s place among legendary undisputed heavyweight champions like Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis, and Muhammad Ali. However, a cloud loomed over the Ukrainian’s reign.
Usyk, 37, faced a mandatory rematch with Fury scheduled for 21 December 2024 but also risked losing his IBF belt due to inactivity against their mandatory challenger, Filip Hrgović.
IBF regulations dictate that champions must defend against their chosen challenger, and Usyk hadn’t faced Hrgović in over two years.
Following weeks of speculation, Usyk confirmed on Tuesday (25 June) via a Twitter/X video message that he has vacated the IBF title.
This opens the door for the winner of the highly anticipated bout between Anthony Joshua and Daniel Dubois, scheduled for 21 September 2024, to claim the vacant belt.
Dubois secured his IBF mandatory challenger status by defeating Hrgović on 1 June 2024.
In the video message, Usyk addressed Joshua and Dubois directly: “Anthony and Daniel, I know the IBF title is important to you. It is my present to you on 21 September.”
