Using soldiers in Galamsey fight is a shot-term solution – Nat. Secretary small scale miners

The National Secretary of the Small-Scale Miners Association, Godwin Armah is arguing that using soldiers to curb the galamsey menace is not a long-term solution.

While speaking on Okay FM monitored by MyNewsGh.com, Godwin Armah mentioned that the small-scale miners over the years have caused no damage to water bodies like the illegal miners otherwise referred to as galameyers.

He mentioned that these galamseyers aside from destroying water bodies, are also dangerous. He recounted how one of their task force commanders was shot by galamseyer while guarding the sites.

“The soldiers we’ve been using to fight the galamsey menace is a short-term solution to a long-term challenge. When soldiers are posted to these sites, then what? We the small-scale miners have been mining and haven’t caused any problems for the Ghana Water Company. The last time, the galamseyers shot one of the task forces guarding the sites. He nearly lost his life.” He revealed

According to him, most of these galamseyers are from Togo and Volta Region. “Those people from Volta Regions mining illegally are experienced in this mining”, he emphasized.

He mentioned that after research was conducted by their task forces, it was discovered that about 80% of these galamseyers are Togolese.
