Upper West: Wa MCE hails YEA skills training as key to national development

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Wa Municipal, Issahaku Tahiru Moomin, has lauded the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) skills training programme as a vital catalyst for national development.

Speaking at the event where 300 young trainees from various trades graduated and received essential tools, Tahiru Moomin emphasised that the programme’s impact transcends mere job creation, heralding it as a cornerstone in the broader strategy to uplift the nation’s economic fortunes.

The event, which took place in the Upper West Region, saw the distribution of equipment to the graduates, equipping them to start their own businesses in trades such as hairdressing, beauty care, carpentry, electrical works, painting, welding, and auto mechanics.

These young men and women, who completed an intensive six-month training regimen, are now poised to not only create sustainable livelihoods for themselves but also to potentially expand their enterprises to employ others.

MCE Moomin, in his remarks to the media during the presentation, underscored the programme’s significance in fostering self-reliance and economic growth.

He stated, “We commend your efforts in patronising this programme. Your dedication is highly commendable. In developing a country, it is not about painting the walls or handing out money, but about empowering people to earn a decent income.”

“The objective of this program is to provide decent jobs, enabling people to live independently without relying on relatives. This is how a country is developed. Our target is to create jobs for you through the provision of skills training, and it is our hope that you use this opportunity to train more people.”

Alhassan Yussif, the regional director of YEA, provided further insights into the program’s structure and objectives. He noted that 80 out of the 300 graduates were from the Wa municipality, with the remaining distributed across various districts in the region. He highlighted that each apprentice was paired with a master trainer to ensure effective mentorship and skill acquisition.

“All 80 apprentices in Wa were assigned to master trainers, and each of you received a monthly stipend of GHC500 throughout your training period. This was to support you financially, ensuring you could focus entirely on your training without distractions. Additionally, we provided your trainers with a monthly allowance of GHC100 per trainee.”

“The training is now complete, and as promised, you will receive the tools necessary to start your businesses. We also assured you that you would be paid for an additional two months to help you establish yourselves. Moving forward, we will recruit another 300 individuals to undergo the same training programme,” he stated.

The impact of the program was also echoed by the beneficiaries themselves. Saani Hiba, who specialised in beauty care, expressed her gratitude and optimism about the future.

“They have really done well, and I am grateful. I went through the programme for the past six months and received GHC500 each month. The youth will be empowered to earn decent income if this programme continues.”

Another beneficiary, who trained in auto mechanics, affirmed the program’s effectiveness, describing the training as rigorous and comprehensive. “Our master trainers have really trained us well. Everyone out there should try and patronise this programme.”
