Ghanaian flyweight Theophilus “Lopez” Allotey suffered a fourth-round technical knockout (TKO) defeat at the hands of Zambian boxer Patrick “Baddo” Chinyemba, losing his bid for the International Boxing Association’s (IBA) African flyweight title.
The historic bout, which marked the first-ever IBA Champions’ Night event held in Africa, took place at the Adwa Museum Hall in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on Saturday (17 August).
Allotey started strong, controlling the early exchanges in the first round and the initial stages of the second. However, Chinyemba gradually took command, particularly in the latter half of the second round, before fully asserting his dominance in the fourth.
The Zambian unleashed a relentless series of body blows that left Allotey struggling to cope, sending the Ghanaian to the canvas three times.
During the third knockdown, Chinyemba delivered a short uppercut to Allotey’s body, leaving the 22-year-old Ghanaian on his knees as the referee began the count.
Although Allotey managed to rise before the count was completed, he gestured towards his lower abdomen, claiming he had been struck by a low blow. However, the referee dismissed this protest, awarding the TKO victory to Chinyemba.
Speaking after the bout, a disappointed Allotey expressed his gratitude to his supporters, saying, “I have had some time to reflect on my actions and inactions. I am well and ready to go out again. I return to the ring in September 2024 for my 4th Pro fight; details will be announced soon.”
He added, “Yesterday I felt short; I am disappointed, but as [an] athlete, sometimes you have [to] recognise your limits, retreat and live to fight another day. I am sorry for any inconvenience [caused to the] team, my fans and supporters. My goal remains the same (to become a world champion).”
