Police in Walewale, North East Region, have intercepted 37 bags of cocoa seeds in a suspected smuggling operation.
The West Mamprusi Police Command uncovered the contraband on Sunday (17 November) after receiving a tip-off.
Acting on intelligence, officers raided a private residence in the West Mamprusi municipality, where the cocoa seeds were allegedly being prepared for smuggling across Ghana’s borders.
Upon their arrival, the suspect denied the police access to a locked room, forcing officers to break in and seize the goods.
The suspect has since been uncooperative, refusing to disclose how the cocoa was transported to the property or the intended smuggling route.
The confiscated cocoa seeds are now under police custody as investigations continue. The West Mamprusi Municipal Police Command has declined to provide further details, citing the ongoing nature of the case.
This seizure highlights the growing threat of agricultural smuggling in border regions, which undermines Ghana’s cocoa industry—a vital pillar of the country’s economy.
