TAGG urges Mahama to prioritise emergency funds for Kantamanto fire victims

The Traders Advocacy Group Ghana (TAGG) has called on President-elect John Dramani Mahama to prioritise emergency funding for traders devastated by a massive fire that tore through parts of Accra’s bustling Kantamanto Market in the early hours of Thursday (2 January).

In a statement issued on the same day, TAGG expressed deep sympathies to affected traders, acknowledging the extensive losses incurred.

The group assured the public that it is actively collaborating with stakeholders to address the crisis and deliver immediate assistance.

“We understand the immense hardship this incident has caused, and we stand in solidarity with the affected members and traders during this difficult time,” the statement read.

TAGG revealed that it is engaging with the Ministry of Trade, the Ghana Enterprise Agency, disaster management organisations, local authorities, and the incoming administration to assess the damage and coordinate relief efforts.

Highlighting the urgency of the situation, the group appealed to the incoming government to prioritise securing emergency funding once in office to aid the traders in rebuilding their businesses.

“After assessing the extent of the damage and immediate needs of the affected traders, Traders Advocacy Group Ghana (TAGG) is urging the next government to promptly get emergency funding to assist traders in rebuilding their businesses,” TAGG reiterated.

The Kantamanto Market, a vital hub of Ghana’s informal economy, has long been the lifeline for thousands of traders and artisans.

Thursday’s fire has left many grappling with significant financial losses, sparking calls for swift government intervention to support the affected community.
