Supreme Court is the ultimate authority – Kyei Mensah-Bonsu backs Afenyo Markin’s move

Former Majority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, expressed strong support for the current Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo Markin, regarding his decision to bring parliamentary issues before the Supreme Court.

This move has sparked debate within political circles, but Bonsu believes it was a necessary step in clarifying legal interpretations.

“The Supreme Court is the ultimate authority when it comes to interpreting the law,” Bonsu asserted in an interview on Sompa FM monitored by MyNewsGH.com, underscoring the importance of seeking judicial guidance in complex legislative matters. He commended Afenyo-Markin for taking this bold step, particularly in light of the challenges posed by recent decisions made by the Speaker of Parliament, Honourable Kingsford Alban Bagbin.

The veteran lawmaker pointed out that the Speaker’s actions have, at times, complicated parliamentary proceedings, which warranted a legal examination.

“The decisions made by the Speaker have adversely affected our work, and it is crucial that we seek clarification from the Supreme Court,” he noted.

In his comments, Bonsu criticized those who have condemned the New Patriotic Party (NPP) leadership for resorting to the judiciary. “We cannot let fears about the separation of powers deter us from seeking justice. If we feel the Speaker is overstepping his authority, we must take action,” he said firmly. He added that the separation of powers should not be an excuse for inaction when legitimate concerns arise.

Reflecting on past events, Kyei Mensah highlighted several instances where he believes Bagbin has exercised excessive authority, often undermining the majority side’s position in Parliament. “This is not just about today; it’s a pattern we have observed. The Speaker’s decisions have consistently favored certain agendas, which have led to frustrations among the majority,” he elaborated.

Osei Kyei-Mensa-Bonsu reinforced the necessity of maintaining checks and balances within Ghana’s political system. “It’s our duty to uphold the law and ensure that no one, not even the Speaker, operates above it. Seeking the Supreme Court’s guidance is not only appropriate but essential for the health of our democracy,” he concluded.
