Noah Lyles makes history with photo-finish 100m victory at Paris Olympics
Noah Lyles claimed his historic first Olympic gold medal on Sunday (4 August), winning a thrilling men’s 100m final at the Stade de France.
The US sprinter ended a 20-year drought for American champions in the blue-riband event, edging out Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson by the narrowest of margins.
In a race that will be remembered for years to come, Lyles clocked a personal best (PB) of 9.784 seconds to pip Thompson (9.789 seconds) to gold.
The race was a spectacle of pure speed, with all eight finalists separated by just 0.12 seconds at the finish line.
Azamati and Saminu crash out of 100m
Ghana’s hopes of a sprint medal at the Paris Olympics suffered a setback on Sunday (4 August) as Benjamin Azamati and Abdul-Rasheed Saminu were eliminated from the men’s 100m semi-finals.
Azamati, who had impressed in the heats, was unable to replicate his form in the semi-finals.
Drawn in the same race as world champion Noah Lyles, the Ghanaian clocked 10.17 seconds to finish ninth.
Saminu improved slightly on his heat time, running 10.05 seconds, but it was not enough to secure a place in the final.
He finished seventh in his semi-final, 0.92 seconds behind second-placed qualifier Fred Kerley of the United States.
Ghana’s Yeboah bows out of high jump competition
Rose Amoanimaa Yeboah became the second Ghanaian athlete to exit the Paris Olympics after failing to qualify for the women’s high jump final.
The 22-year-old, with a personal best (PB) and season’s best (SB) of 1.97m, was unable to clear the automatic qualifying height of 1.97m or the necessary 1.92m to reach the final.
Competing alongside world record holder Yaroslava Mahuchikh of Ukraine, Yeboah progressed through the earlier rounds but could not overcome the significant increase in height to 1.92m. She finished in 14th place.
Stacey’s Olympic journey ends in 100m freestyle heats
Ghanaian swimmer Harry Stacey was eliminated from the men’s 100m freestyle at the Paris Olympics.
The 24-year-old’s Olympic journey ended on Tuesday (30 July) after clocking a time of 51.12 seconds in the heats.
