Sports Roundup: Cristiano Ronaldo’s YouTube Triumph, Black Princesses’ World Cup Prep & Sports Ministry’s $3M Controversy

This week in sports saw the Black Princesses wrap up their preparations for the 2024 FIFA U-20 World Cup, Cristiano Ronaldo launched his very own YouTube channel and controversy between the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MoYS) and the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC).

Sports Ministry clarifies Africa Games payment dispute with GBC

The Ministry of Youth and Sports (MoYS) has issued a clarification regarding the payment made to the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) for broadcasting the 13th African Games held in Accra earlier this year.

The clarification follows remarks by Youth and Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif during a Public Accounts Committee (PAC) session on 19 August, which led to a public disagreement between the ministry and GBC.

During the PAC session, Minister Ussif claimed that over US$3 million had been paid to GBC for its role in producing and broadcasting the Games.

However, GBC’s Director General, Amin Alhassan, disputed this figure, stating that the broadcaster had only received US$105,000 to support its decision to dedicate an entire channel to the event, suspending normal programming on GTV Sports Plus.

Ghana’s bid to retain the Western Regional Baseball5 Championship title ended in a dramatic 2-1 defeat to Tunisia in the final on 18 August.

The competition, held at the NIS Sports Complex Gymnasium in Lagos, Nigeria, saw Ghana enter as the defending champions.

Despite a strong start, including a 2-0 win against hosts Nigeria, Ghana was dealt a surprise 0-2 loss by Tunisia in the group stage. After a rebound victory against Benin, Ghana faced Tunisia again in the final but fell just short of retaining their title.
