Speaker knew I was going to the Supreme Court, we spoke about it – Afenyo-Markin

Hon Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, the Majority Leader has shockingly revealed that he told the Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin about his intention of proceeding to the Supreme Court before he initiated that action.

“This was meant to be a matter of mutual understanding,” Afenyo-Markin expressed, his tone laced with frustration.

“We discussed this, and he gave me his word that he wouldn’t interfere with Haruna’s request. His commitment was the foundation of our trust, and I took him at his word.”

For Afenyo-Markin, the Speaker’s assurance was supposed to provide a buffer, allowing him to defend Parliament’s integrity without appearing partial to one side of the aisle. “I was prepared to maintain my stance without fear of backlash because I knew we had that agreement,” he noted.

Yet, without prior warning, Bagbin proceeded to act on the petition, declaring the seats vacant. The decision left Afenyo-Markin feeling blindsided and undermined, forcing him to seek recourse through the legal system.

“I never wanted to take this public,” he admitted, “but Speaker Bagbin’s actions made it impossible for me to stay silent. This issue goes beyond party lines—it’s about preserving the trust that keeps Parliament functional.”

Afenyo-Markin’s recourse to the Supreme Court, he said, is not about personal grievances but rather a quest for clarity on the powers and responsibilities surrounding parliamentary seats and independence.

By involving the court, he hopes to avoid criticism from NDC members, who might interpret any hesitation to act as a partisan maneuver. “I want it clear: this isn’t about scoring political points.

“I reached out to the Supreme Court not to undermine anyone, but to uphold the structure and impartiality of Parliament,” he said, emphasizing that Speaker Bagbin was fully aware of his intentions to seek a judicial ruling if neutrality wasn’t upheld.
