National Democratic Congress(NDC) Member of Parliament(MP) for Wassa East Constituency in the Western Region, Isaac Adjei Mensah is of the view that the scrapping of road tolls has seriously affected the finances of the country.
During an interview on Onua FM monitored by MyNewsGh.com, the lawmaker stated that the scrapping of the road tolls has caused financial loss to the state.
He blamed the Akufo-Addo-led government for canceling the road tolls explaining that the action prevented the government from getting enough money to construct roads and bridges.
“The closing of the toll booths has affected Ghana a lot. The Akufo-Addo and Dr. Bawumia government do not understand anything about road maintenance and toll booths. I remember that when Nana Addo was coming into power, he said we wouldn’t go for loans.
They said they would collect tolls to construct roads. We advised them not to cancel it. They need to bring it back. It is only John Mahama who can reinstate the road tolls because we need one to polish our roads and construct bridges. E-Levy will be cancelled and road tolls will be reintroduced”. He hinted.
It would be recalled that the collection of road tolls was previously halted following a directive by former Roads and Highways Minister Kwasi Amoako-Atta in 2021.
This move was in line with the government’s introduction of the E-levy announced by former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta during the 2022 budget presentation in November 2021.
Hon. Isaac Adjei Mensah has described the move by the ruling government as a bad move.
