Scrap the E-levy now, it was a promise – Dr. Cadman Mills to Mahama

Dr. Cadman Mills, the brother of the late Ghanaian president John Evans Atta Mills, has made a passionate appeal to President-Elect John Dramani Mahama, urging him to honour his campaign promise of scrapping the controversial E-Levy.

Taking to social media, Dr. Mills emphasized the urgency of abolishing the tax, which has been a thorn in the side of many Ghanaians.

“Mr. President-Elect, do the needful. Immediately scrap the E-Levy! It was a promise,” he declared, highlighting the public’s anticipation for Mahama’s leadership to bring relief.

Dr. Mills also sought to debunk a common misconception surrounding the tax, stating that the IMF does not mandate specific taxes like the E-Levy or COVID tax.

“The Fund mainly insists on the total revenues that must be mobilized, not in its detail,” he clarified, suggesting that the government has room to explore alternative revenue streams.

The E-Levy, introduced in 2022 as a tax on electronic financial transactions, was initially presented as a solution to Ghana’s economic challenges.

However, its implementation was met with widespread disapproval, with critics pointing out its adverse effects on financial inclusion and the daily lives of ordinary citizens.

The levy quickly became a symbol of discontent, fueling protests and debates about its fairness and effectiveness.
