Schools planning to engage in mass cheating during examination- WAEC Warns

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), the body which administers the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), has announced that it is fully aware of elaborate plans by some schools to cheat on a massive scale during the examination.

According to WAEC, there  are three ways the institutions intend to engage in the malpractice:

Some institutions have asked students to pay various amounts of money so that the funds  raised would be used to bribe invigilators so that the candidates would be assisted to answer  questions during examination.

Also some supervisors of the examination ( usually heads of the senior high schools where the examination will take place) have planned to assign teachers to invigilate subjects they teach so that the teacher can supply answers to the candidates.

Last but not least some institutions have registered persons who are not their students, a practice against the rules of the examination, so that they can sit the examination.

“The Council has however noted with concern grand schemes by a number of institutions to engage in mass cheating during the examination,” a press release dated August 19, 2024, announcing the start of the 2024 WASSCE said.

The Council warned that anyone caught facilitating or engaging in examination malpractice will be dealt with in accordance with the rules and regulations of the examination,  adding that candidates who do not qualify will have their entries cancelled and when they succeed in writing the examination, their results will be cancelled.
