Salaga: Supporters of NPP, NDC clash over DRIP equipment

Some supporters of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Salaga South of the Savannah Region clashed on Wednesday (5 September 2024), over the government’s District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP) initiative.

This happened after the Savannah Regional Minister, Saeed Muhazu Jibril, handed over the equipment to the seven district assemblies to send to their various districts.

The NPP members in the constituency organised to usher in the machines to the district, but the opposition NDC said they would do the same because the equipment belongs to the district, not only to NPP members.

According to NPP Salaga South constituency youth organiser, Adam Mohammed Mansuru, who described the incident to Asaase News, both party supporters were there to welcome the equipment, but the NDC members had a plan to attack them if they noticed any NPP posters on the machines.

“We treated lightly and thought that they knew it was our government that’s in power and it’s an initiative of the party and government so they won’t do that.”

He indicated that the NDC launched an attack on them, leading to a confrontation and misunderstanding, resulting in some supporters from both parties being injured.

Three people from both sides were injured in the process.

According to him, all three injured persons have been treated and discharged.

Meanwhile, calm has since returned to the community, but no arrest has been made yet.

The Savannah Region had its share of the DRIP equipment in August 2024, but it was handed over to the various districts this week to help assemblies improve road networks in their districts.
