Run for your life if your lawyer is a liar –  Clients advised

Public defender with the Legal Aid Commission, lawyer Ernestina Obboh Botchwey has advised people to avoid the services of lawyers who are untruthful, explaining that untruthful lawyers will have no qualms betraying their clients so as to protect their own reputation.

Ms. Obboh Botchwey, who has dedicated her social media handles to providing free legal education to the public, also urged people to equally reject advice from lawyers to lie in court, warning that when the lies are found out by the courts, the consequences will be on the client and not the lawyer who gave the advice.

She underscored the fact that lawyers are able to ply their trade based on a good reputation and will go to great lengths to protect it even at the expense of their clients.

“If your lawyer is a liar erh, Don’t get too excited. Run away from him or her.  One day, he will sacrifice you and keep his reputation intact before the court and other lawyers,” Ms Obboh Botchwey warned.

“A lawyer’s reputation is his wealth. Clients come and go. Don’t let any lawyer tell you to lie and think that he will defend your honour when the lies come out,” she explained.

She noted that given that lawyers do not testify in court, persons advised to lie in Court must know that they are responsible for lying in court.

.”Did you know that lawyers do not testify in court. It is the ordinary people who swear by the Bible, Quaran, Cross or anything they believe in that they will say the truth. So who lies?” She quizzed.

As a public defender, Ms Obboh Botchwey’s work involves being engaged in criminal ligation on behalf of the indigent – accused persons and  assisting persons in need of legal assistance for the realization of the right of equality before the law and to fair trial.
