Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has confirmed that Spanish midfielder Rodri will miss the remainder of the season after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).
The 28-year-old suffered the injury during City’s 2-2 Premier League draw against Arsenal on Sunday (22 September) following a collision with Arsenal’s Thomas Partey.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday (27 September), Guardiola revealed that Rodri underwent knee surgery and is expected to be sidelined for the rest of the campaign.
“He had surgery this morning—ACL and some meniscus,” Guardiola said. “Next season he will be here. This season is over [for him].”
Rodri’s absence is a major blow for City, as he was a key figure in their midfield during the 2023/2024 title run.
Last season, the team struggled without him, losing four out of the five matches he missed. Guardiola had previously described the Spaniard as “irreplaceable.”
“Unfortunately we got the worst (news) but these things happen,” added Guardiola. “We will be there to support him in his recovery step-by-step. What he gives us, we don’t have a similar player.”
“But the others can all together replace what Rodri has given since his arrival to us. We will have to do it as a team and find a way to play a lot of matches without an important player for us.”
Since joining from Atletico Madrid in 2019, Rodri has been instrumental in City’s success, with the team losing just 11% of matches when he plays, compared to 24% without him.
In addition to Rodri, City will also be without Belgian midfielder Kevin De Bruyne for their upcoming Premier League clash against Newcastle United on Saturday (28 September).
De Bruyne is expected to be out until after the international break in October, meaning he will miss City’s games against ŠK Slovan Bratislava in the Champions League as well as a Premier League clash against Fulham.
