Rights come with Responsibilities – Deputy AG on Democracy Hub Protests

Deputy Attorney General Diana Asonaba Dapaah has raised concerns about a growing disconnect between individuals’ belief in their rights and freedoms and their understanding of the responsibilities that come with those rights.

Speaking in the wake of a chaotic demonstration at the Democracy Hub, which resulted in several arrests, she emphasized that this lack of balance has contributed to the current social and legal unrest.

In an interview on Pure FM monitored by MyNewsGH.com, Madam Diana explained, “Many people have a deep belief in their rights, but they forget that these rights come with responsibilities. This attitude has led to a situation where some individuals feel entitled to act without accountability, often misunderstanding the law in their favor.”

Her comments came after numerous protesters were detained during the demonstration, which ended in disorder. Among those arrested was a female demonstrator who, according to reports, had been mistreated. Addressing these claims, Diana Asonaba Dapaah clarified the situation, pointing out that certain allegations were inaccurate.

“There’s been a lot of misinformation, particularly about the woman who was arrested. She was taken to both the Police Hospital and Uracare Hospital, where tests confirmed that she was not pregnant,” she stated.

This was a direct response to claims that the woman had been mistreated while pregnant. Diana further noted that even if a pregnant woman were involved, her condition would not absolve her from facing legal consequences. “Pregnancy does not exempt anyone from the law. If you commit an offense, you still have to answer for it,” she explained.

She also dismissed the allegation that a young boy who participated in the protest had been arrested and imprisoned. “That claim is simply not true,” she asserted, addressing the growing speculation surrounding the treatment of demonstrators.

During the interview with host Kwame Adinkra, the Deputy Attorney General hinted that the chaos that erupted during the protest may have had political undertones. “When you look at the situation, it’s clear that there could be political motives behind the disorder,” she remarked, suggesting that the protest may have been more than just an expression of public dissatisfaction.

Diana Asonaba Dapaah was firm in her stance that the rights of the protesters were not violated, as she outlined the legal procedures that were followed in processing the demonstrators. “The law was followed. Their rights were respected, and the appropriate legal steps were taken in bringing them before the court,” she stated, refuting claims that the protesters were treated unjustly.
