Remembering Jerry John Rawlings four years on

Today marks four years since Ghana lost former President Jerry John Rawlings, whose charismatic leadership left an enduring legacy in Ghanaian politics and society.

Ghana’s former President Jerry John Rawlings died at the age of 73 on Thursday morning, 12 November 2020, at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) in Accra.

Rawlings, who led Ghana twice, first as a military leader and then as a democratically elected president, championed anti-corruption and social justice causes.

His policies focused on improving living standards for Ghanaians, particularly the underprivileged, while fostering national pride and unity throughout his years in office.

In marking the fourth anniversary of his passing, the family and foundation of the late Rawlings, in a statement dated 12 November 2024, wrote: “Flt Lt Jerry John Rawlings was a warm soul who dedicated his whole life to the ordinary people. He was an example of African patriotic leadership committed to freedom, justice, and accountability for the ordinary man and woman.”

“He emphasised Africa’s need for leaders and governments that are genuinely committed to serving their people.

“Jerry John Rawlings remains The People’s Man: A leader who gave his life willingly in service to the ordinary people.’’

As Ghanaians remember his legacy, Rawlings remains a symbol of resilience and a powerful influence in shaping Ghana’s democratic values and political landscape.
