Being close to family helps me cope with pressure from fame, says Ayra Starr

Nigerian singer Ayra Starr recently shared insights into her journey through fame and the demands of the music industry in a heartfelt conversation with American singer and actress Coco Jones.

In a chat produced by Rolling Stone, the two artists explored the unique challenges women face in the spotlight, offering a glimpse into the often hidden struggles that accompany their careers.

Reflecting on her experience, Ayra Starr spoke openly about the intense expectations that come with her role. “I feel like it’s always a lot,” she expressed. “People only see about 1%, but for an artist, it takes a village. It takes so much to get things done right.”

Despite her growing popularity, Ayra said that she still lives with her family, a factor that keeps her grounded amidst the demands of fame. “When I go back home, I’m still living with my family. My brothers might be making noise and playing video games, so the house is still very much full,” she said, highlighting how her family’s presence helps her handle the pressures of her career.

Ayra also opened up about the toll of her packed schedule, especially after a year of numerous performances. “I did so many shows last year… sometimes I disappear when it gets overwhelming,” she stated, acknowledging the importance of taking time to recharge.

She emphasised her strong connection to her Nigerian roots, mentioning that she seeks out Nigerian food wherever she goes as a source of comfort and happiness.

Discussing her creative journey, Ayra Starr said she is dedicated to staying true to her artistic vision despite industry pressures. “I definitely listen to close people around me, but I knew what I wanted creatively,” she said. “I’ve always had the freedom to create whatever kind of music I wanted.”
