Re-collation: “What is being done now is not new” – EC responds to critics

The Electoral Commission (EC) has defended the Commission’s decision to re-collate results from some parliamentary elections.

This decision follows mounting criticisms regarding the EC’s handling of post-election processes.

Addressing the media at a press conference on Tuesday (24 December), Dr. Bossman Asare, a Deputy Chairman in charge of Corperate Affairs at the EC clarified that re-collation is not a novel practice, citing past instances to validate the Commission’s actions.

“The commission is trying to make a point that what is being done now is not new. There are a lot of historical antecedents,” he stated, in response to concerns about the legitimacy of the process.

Dr. Asare referenced historical examples, such as the re-collation of results in the Tolon constituency in Tamale (2004), Yapei Kusawgu (2004), and the Pru constituency (2004), among others, to substantiate his argument.

The EC also dismissed allegations of illegality, emphasizing that re-collation is a lawful measure to safeguard the accuracy and integrity of election outcomes.

He assured the public that the MP-elects for Ablekuma North and Dome-Kwabenya will be declared before the January 7 inauguration.

The development also comes after the High Court dismissed an injunction application brought by Mr. Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey, the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress which was argued by the Learned Edudzi Tameklo.

The application was against the Electoral Commission to refrain from re-collating results from constituencies which had challenges with collation and declarations on the 7th December, 2024 elections.

The High Court Justice, Rev. Father Joseph Adu Owusu Agyemang who was unimpressed by the arguments of Mr. Tameklo made his view clear that the declarations of results sought to be re-collated by the Electoral Commission under duress was an illegality.

The Presiding Judge of the Court held that the Court could not lend its support to such an illegality.
