Ghanaian sports photographer, Kwesi Arkoh, has provided germane reasons why he will not sweat over covering the Ghana Premier League.
According to him, reporters and photographers were not provided with accreditation for the league this year.
Even though sports journalists have been asked to prove their identity with their identity cards from their place of work, they have to call in for favours before they are allowed to match venues.
Worrying is the fact some journalists who do not have people to call in for favour are manhandled and disrespected by those who man the various gates at the match venues.
His post shared via social media read “This season for instance, organizers didn’t make any provisions for media accreditations. I learned we can use our media IDs as accreditations. However, when you get to the venue, and show your ID, you still have to literally beg to be allowed entry. It’s as though they’re doing you a favor.
At times you have to call someone, who knows someone who also knows the head of media at the said venue to allow you entry. Chale wey kind wahala this. And you wonder why the league is the way it is.
I won’t allow myself to be disrespected at any venue in the name of trying to cover a league that even organizers do not care much about.
If they really wanted us there, they would have made accreditations available for stress free entry into venues.
No one respects sports photographers in this country. We’re always an afterthought.
Cuz tell me why you’ll get to venues and they’ll tell you someone says no chairs for photographers.
You’ll be told black stars training is open to the media yet when you get there you have to beg with a sad face before you’re allowed entry.
What the actual fuck”.
