Public service has become a path to personal wealth – Sulemana Braimah

Sulemana Braimah, the Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), has expressed sharp criticism regarding the monetisation of politics and governance in Ghana.

He argued that financial benefits often outweigh competence and expertise in political appointments during an interview on JoyNews’ Newsfile,

“Sometimes it’s not about the skills. It’s not about the expertise. I keep saying that at this stage until something changes, our politics and our governance is really about money-making,” Braimah stated, pointing to a systemic issue that prioritises personal gain over national service.

He referenced the Akufo-Addo administration, highlighting instances where professionals in well-paying roles, such as banking and consultancy, left their positions to occupy political offices within the finance sector.

“We saw under President Akufo-Addo, for example, persons who had decent jobs with banks, insurance companies, and so on.

“All of a sudden, they were leaving to take on positions within the finance sector. You would wonder, if someone is managing an organisation or is a consultant, why would they leave to become CEO of this or that? It’s all about the money, the contracts, and the perks,” he observed.

This trend, according to Braimah, underscores a troubling reality in Ghana’s political framework, where public service is often overshadowed by personal financial ambition.

He expressed hope for change, particularly as Ghana enters a new political era under President John Dramani Mahama’s administration.

“I am hoping they adhere to that,” he said, referencing the government’s promises to introduce measures promoting efficiency and transparency.
