Private Health Facilities Association Lauds NHIA CEO for timely claims payments

The Private Health Facilities Association of Ghana (PHFAoG) has extended high praise to the Chief Executive of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr. Da-costa Aboagye, and his team for their steadfast commitment to settling outstanding claims, which has greatly alleviated the financial burden on healthcare providers.

In a communique issued after their 4th Annual General Conference, held from September 18th to 20th, 2024, the Association highlighted the unprecedented release of over GH¢800 million to clear claims submitted between April and July 2024. This came shortly after a prior disbursement of GH¢151 million in August to cover claims from March.

The PHFAoG underscored the NHIA’s ongoing efforts to resolve the long-standing issue of delayed payments, which had previously strained healthcare delivery, especially for private facilities.

Dr. Kwame Buabeng Frimpong, President of the PHFAoG, expressed that the recent interventions by the NHIA have restored financial stability to many service providers. However, the Association raised concerns over private health insurance schemes, some of which continue to hold back payments, putting healthcare facilities at risk and threatening the sustainability of their services.

As Ghana’s healthcare sector continues to grow, the PHFAoG urged private insurers to follow the NHIA’s lead and promptly settle claims to ensure consistent and quality healthcare delivery nationwide.

This recognition of Dr. Aboagye’s leadership comes as a breath of fresh air amid years of uncertainty for healthcare providers dependent on timely payments from insurance schemes.

The commendation was contained in a communique issued after the Association’s 4th Annual General Conference, held from September 18th to 20th, 2024 and signed by its President, Dr Kwame Buabeng Frimpong.
“PHFAoG acknowledges the Authority’s extraordinary efforts in releasing a significant amount of funds to settle claims owed to healthcare service providers across the nation.

“This timely intervention by Dr. Aboagye’s team has restored a level of financial stability, which is essential for sustaining quality healthcare delivery.

“The Authority has in the past weeks historically released a colossal amount for the payment of claims to service providers nationwide.

“Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of some Private Health Insurance Schemes which have held to ransom, several months of unpaid claims due to service providers creating a financial bottleneck that threatens the sustainability of the services provided by their members,” the Association said.
